Jim and Karen Crocker are the proprietors of the store. Jim grew up in Deep River and returned in 2020. As partners in a successful consulting and writing agency, Jim and Karen gained experience marketing and selling their services on-line. That experience motivated them to set up their on-line store when they moved to Deep River.
Beer River in the store’s name comes from the affectionate name many locals associate with Deep River. Sometime in the 1970’s local teen-agers were able to adapt the lettering on the town’s water tower, humorously changing the town’s name from Deep River to Beer River.
The town of Deep River is unique, friendly town on Highway 17 and the Ottawa River between North Bay and Ottawa. An original planned community, Deep River was established in the mid-1940s to house the atomic scientists working at the Chalk River Nuclear Labs. Today there are still scientists living in the community, along with Armed Forces personnel from Garrison Petawawa (Canada’s largest Armed Forces base) just down the highway, entrepreneurs, retirees, students and others. The town has its own hospital, police force and fire department.
The Deep River lifestyle is dominated by the outdoors. The Ottawa River is a summer focal point for power boaters, sailors, kayakers, canoeists and those who love to fish. There are hundreds of clean water lakes within half an hour of the town. In the winter, many residents turn to downhill and x-country skiing, snow shoeing and ice fishing. Those who love the outdoors love Deep River.
